VAE redispersible polymer powder — standard tile-adhesive grade
Serica Materials, the European procurement partner for China-origin specialty inputs, sources standard vinyl acetate–ethylene (VAE) redispersible polymer powder (RDP), Tg 0–5 °C, from qualified producers for tile-adhesive and dry-mix mortar manufacturers. Redispersibility, ash and moisture are on every batch Certificate of Analysis; customs classification and REACH position are confirmed before shipment.

Which RDP type fits your product
| Type | Tg | Typical use | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard VAE (this page) | 0–5 °C | Tile adhesives C1T, C2T, C2TE; wall putty; dry-mix mortars; plasters | Listed |
| High-flexibility VAE | −5 to 0 °C | ETICS base coats, repair mortars, flexible tile adhesives | On request |
| VAE-VeoVa, hydrophobic, acrylic | Varies | Premium exterior renders, water-repellent systems, UV-exposed facades | Assessed on request |
Where this grade is used
In tile adhesive, RDP is typically dosed at 2–4%. It gives the cured adhesive flexibility, adhesion on difficult substrates such as polished porcelain, and the freeze–thaw adhesion that EN 12004 classes test for. Final classification depends on your full formulation and your own testing.
Specification (as carried on the Certificate of Analysis)
| Parameter | Typical band | On every batch CoA |
|---|---|---|
| Polymer type | VAE (vinyl acetate–ethylene) | Declared |
| Glass transition temperature (Tg) | 0–5 °C | Periodic |
| Redispersibility, sieve residue | ≤ 2% | Yes |
| Ash | 10–14% | Yes |
| Film tensile strength | ≥ 2.0 N/mm², method stated on the TDS | Yes |
| Moisture | As stated on the TDS | Yes |
| Bulk density | 400–600 g/L | Periodic |
Industry-typical bands. Producer values are on the TDS; actual values are on the CoA for each batch.
Why redispersibility is on every CoA: powder that does not fully re-emulsify leaves lumps in the mortar and weakens adhesion; it is the most common RDP quality failure.
Why packaging is specified: RDP absorbs humidity and can partly re-emulsify inside a poorly sealed bag, so triple-layer bags with a sealed inner PE liner are a contract requirement.
Qualifying a new RDP
A new grade typically qualifies in 4–8 weeks of lab trials, faster than HPMC, because the key tile-adhesive tests are standardised. With a 12-month shelf life, delivery sizes are matched to your consumption.
Documents and verification
Before first order: TDS, SDS with monomer statement, and a specimen CoA. Every batch: CoA carrying redispersibility, ash, film tensile strength and moisture. Third-party verification (SGS or Intertek) is available per lot on request. CE marking of your finished adhesive under EN 12004 stays with you; the CoA carries the data that supports it.

Frequently asked questions
What Tg do I need for a tile adhesive?
Standard tile adhesives use VAE powder with Tg 0–5 °C. A lower Tg, −5 to 0 °C, gives a more flexible mortar for ETICS base coats and deformable adhesives.
Which customs code applies to VAE redispersible powder imported into the EU?
VAE powder is a vinyl acetate copolymer in primary form, classified under CN 3905 29 00. The code is confirmed for each shipment with the customs broker.
Does RDP need REACH registration?
RDP is a polymer and is exempt from registration under REACH Article 2(9). The registration status of its monomers, vinyl acetate and ethylene (Article 6(3)), is confirmed for each supplier and stated on the SDS before first shipment.
How long does it take to qualify a new RDP?
Typically 4–8 weeks of lab trials in your formulation.
Why is the shelf life only 12 months?
RDP is moisture-sensitive. Sealed packaging and first-in, first-out rotation keep it within specification.
How do I get a sample?
